From Roman Shores to Modern Tables

When Romans settled on the shores of Southern Spain two millennia ago, they came across an area—where the Sierra Blanca meets the sea—where they discovered coastal salt pans. Back then, salt was essential and very valuable: for food, for preservation, and for everyday life. These salt beds produced crystals of exceptional purity and flavor, and the Romans gave the place the name Salduba— the Salt City. Today, that place is known as Marbella.

Rediscovering What Was Lost

We are Anne Rice and Mees de Wit, and we share a deep love for both quality gourmet salts and Marbella. While learning more about the city’s history, we discovered how closely its Roman roots were connected to salt production and distribution. To our surprise, despite this rich history, local sea salt was no longer coming from Marbella.

That discovery stayed with us. Out of respect for this special place and a desire for pure, natural, healthy food, we decided to act on this insight. We searched across Andalusia for traditional sea salts of exceptional quality—salt produced the traditional way—and brought it back with a clear purpose: to reconnect Marbella with its salt heritage.

Hand-Harvested at sunrise

In Andalusia, family-owned salt producers still continue to harvest sea salt using methods passed down through generations. Guided by sun, wind, and tides, salt is formed naturally in shallow evaporation ponds and collected by hand, without industrial processing. This slow, respectful approach preserves the salt’s natural minerals and reflects a deep connection to the land, the sea, and centuries of Andalusian craftsmanship. This is salt as it was meant to be: pure, unrefined, alive with the essence of the sea.
